Hewitt-Trussville 2, Grissom 1: Tigers, Huskies, and Panthers finish area play at 4-2

In soccer, goals matter.  Despite losing 2-1 on the road at Hewitt-Trussville, Grissom secured a play-off spot.  Grissom, Hewitt, and Huntsville finished area play with 4-2 records, but the Tigers advance to the play-offs because of their lead in goal-differential, a lead that seemed precarious in front of the large and loud crowd.   Grissom controlled possession in the first half, but Hewitt took advantage of a Grissom miscue in the 14th minute to claim a 1-0 lead.  Grissom tied the score in the 17th minute of the second half.  Ben Smith drew a foul in the box, and Wendell Giolo scored on the penalty kick.  Hewitt reclaimed the lead a minute later with a successful thirty-yard strike.  The Huskies continued to press as Grissom pulled back to preserve their lead in overall goal differential, creating a tense final 20 minutes.  Hewitt took 12 shots to Grissom's 10.  Grissom took 3 corners to Hewitt's 2. 7A play-offs begin Tuesday, 1 May.
